Well its been a interesting Spring. Cut my time short for the striped bass run due to low water flows. Came home hoping to work then big rains knocked that idea out. So a lot of small stream brookie fishing for me and my son with all the smallmouth bass waters being to high for fishing. The small streams have been in great shape and fish have been happy to rise to a dry fly. My sons last day of school was May 22nd and we had a vacation planned for Colorado, so we picked him up and hoped on a plane to Denver. This was my sons second trip to Colorado but he was 5 years old the first one and doesn't remember a thing about it. Ten years later and addicted to fly fishing he was excited has one can get. We spent the next 7 days fishing and traveling around the state. Fished the Gunnison, Taylor, Frying Pan. Colorado, South Platte, and a creek for greenback cutts. It was awesome to spend three days fishing my good friend Pat Dorsey which gave me my first job as a guide and took me under is wing. Awesome vacation and a great experience for my son! While we were out west Virginia was getting a lot rain so came home to higher flows but I could fish the rivers Thank God! Colorado vacation isn't cheap so didn't want to have to cancel more work like last month. Now that June is here I'm done guiding for trout and will let them get through the hot months without me beating up on them. So its smallie season now! I have been out some this past week with cooler water temps from the rain topwater bite hasn't started yet. Baitfish streamers produced results with a lot of smaller bass being active now while the older fish are post spawn and still fussy. We did get some nice fish this week to the net but a lot of the adult bass still not ready to put the feed bag back on but it won't be long. Should be able to fish topwater frogs and topwater baitfish with good results any day now. Water warms up more and it will be on. Still have few dates left in July, August, and September for prime topwater fly bite. Don't let the Summer fishing slip by it is my favorite time of year for smallmouth bass fishing here in Virginia!
