This maybe the wettest Summer I can remember in my 47 years. It has been a challenging one to say the least with pop up thunderstorms everyday of July. It was unclear everyday where I was going next and sometimes beating up the same stretch of water over and over just cause it had clean water. We had a little break this past week and Virginia smallmouth bass waters were looking great! Well of course that didn't last long with a big rain storm coming through jacking up most waters again. Thankfully nothing like flood water so give it a few days or so and back at it once the clarity gets good. Fishing has been good when the conditions have allowed. This week out of five guide trips we landed four 20 inch or better fish all on topwater flies. The highlight was a 22" ole warrior smallmouth bass coming up to smash the fly for one of the nicest guys on the planet! Very pleased with my Virginia home waters when we can fish, numbers seem strong with a lot of different age class fish. Still two months to go with topwater flies for smallmouth bass and plan to soak up all I can with my clients. Hard to believe its the first of August all ready, the best weeks are still ahead for smallies on poppers and bugs! I'm currently booked out till mid October but if Fall bass interest you, trout, or even musky Fall is a great time to do it!
