Technically it is still Fall for a few more days but ever since Thanksgiving the weather has changed hard. We have had two snow storms two days apart and temps staying in the 30's for highs recently. Since mid November I have made the switch to primarily trout fishing and a little bit of musky fishing. Unfortunately still dealing with low and clear water and now very cold water from the air temps and snow. Snow is helpful but we really could use some rain to increase the water flows and improve our fishing, more rain and no snow is my vote. The Jackson River tailwater is where I have spent most of my days guiding this Fall. Because its a tailwater the flow is consistent even though it is lower than I like and I have been able to continue to float the river. I have ran a few trout fishing schools this Fall at Escatawba Farms on Dunlap Creek. I cover all things related to trout fishing with a fly rod during the school with a lot of focus on nymph fishing. Its a great way learn and hone your skills on the water with myself and other instructors. I have a couple schools planned for February 28 and March 7th this coming year with the Orvis Roanoke store. You can contact them if interested in signing up. Although its not as pleasant outside fish still have to eat. Just remember in the cold months fish become more lethargic and you have to work harder. Trout aren't willing to move far for their food when its cold so covering the water thoroughly will give you the best chance to drift the fly right to their mouth.
If you need a last minute gift idea I do have gift certificates for guide trips.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for all the support this year and look forward to what 2026 has in store!
